Phyllis Morey heads the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Compliance, E-Discovery, and IT Consulting practice groups. She brings the firm more than 20 years of litigation experience representing clients as in-house counsel and in private law firm and government practices. Phyllis spent several years defending corporations in commercial, product liability, insurance coverage and employment disputes while in private practice. As in-house counsel, Phyllis managed commercial and other significant litigation cases and represented her clients in all aspects of the cases including trial. Her trial experience has included defending breach of contract, insurance coverage actions and employment litigation lawsuits.
In addition to managing and defending litigation matters, Phyllis also had responsibility for litigation-related compliance including records management, developing e-discovery compliance procedures, implementing legal holds, and collaborating with Information Technology departments to ensure readiness for electronic discovery in litigation. Phyllis’ compliance responsibilities also included the development and implementation of procedures to ensure legal and regulatory compliance oversight for publicly traded companies as required by Sarbanes Oxley. Finally, she has implemented compliance programs and activities, coordinated internal investigations and worked with internal personnel and outside counsel to ensure compliance in all critical areas affecting her clients’ business operations.
Phyllis has a unique and keen insight into the needs of corporate clients through her 12 years as in-house counsel for three Fortune 200 companies. She understands the critical balance between managing complex litigation, minimizing business risks and the ever-increasing need for efficient and effective representation by outside counsel. Her approach to client representation is to provide strategic thinking and creative solutions from a business/commercial perspective as well as a litigation perspective to position her clients in the most advantageous position possible. She brings a unique combination of perspectives to all client representations having worked for the Department of Justice when companies were under investigation, having served as in-house counsel and having served as a judicial law clerk for trial and appellate federal judges. She has a comprehensive understanding of the clients’ need for low-cost/high quality representation, successful defense strategies and aggressive approaches to get accelerated rulings on key issues. Ultimately, she understands that her clients must remain profitable and that to the extent litigation detracts from achieving that goal, speedy and successful litigation results facilitate the client’s primary interests.
Martindale-Hubbell awarded Phyllis Golden Morey an AV Peer Review Rating reflecting that she has achieved the highest levels of skill and integrity in the practice of law.
