Matthew Mowers provides a full range of intellectual property services to his clients, including patent and trademark clearance, procurement, licensing and enforcement. Matt advises and assists clients in the mechanical, electromechanical and business method arts, with a focus on the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patents, product clearance reviews, non-infringement and invalidity opinions, and strategic management of the client’s intellectual property rights.
A substantial portion of Matt’s practice is devoted to international trademark, unfair competition and Internet matters. Matt works closely with clients in the selection adoption of trademarks, management and prosecution of trademark portfolios and worldwide enforcement of trademark rights. Because of Matt’s technical background and significant patent experience, he is uniquely suited to provide his clients with a broad-based view into their intellectual property needs, including trade dress and trade secret rights.
Matt recently served 18 months as acting Intellectual Property Counsel for a luxury automobile manufacturer. In this role, Matt established and implemented intellectual property portfolio processes and programs to integrate the sales and marketing, advanced research/product development and management teams. Matt worked closely with client management, providing guidance for all patent filing and prosecution decisions, development of portfolio budgets, exploration and negotiation of licensing opportunities and counseling for enforcement of rights against third parties, thereby implementing a targeted, cost-effective strategy to strengthen and expand the client’s patent portfolio.
Matt also possesses significant expertise in the emerging area of legal technology consulting. Matt assists clients in the evaluation, selection, development and implementation of asset management systems and practice management techniques to address clients’ evolving needs. Matt and the rest of BK’s legal IT consulting team have successfully implemented portfolio management tools and techniques for clients, resulting in significant efficiency improvement, as well as manpower and financial savings.
