A primary focus of Michael Turner’s practice is domestic and foreign patent prosecution for mechanical matters, electromechanical matters, systems, business methods, and designs.  Michael has a sound understanding of various technologies, which he utilizes to protect his client’s intellectual property rights. He is educated in mechanical engineering with a specialty in machine design. His industry background in robotics and automation provides him with experience in various technologies and manufacturing processes. 

One of Michael’s strengths involves analyzing complex legal and technical issues.  This ability enables him to assist clients to bring a product to market by guiding their design through the patent portfolios of competitors.  This also enables him to protect the core technologies of a client.  He is often assigned to protect such technologies where licensing and/or enforcement are necessary; and the strongest protection is required.  Consequently, Michael is active in litigation support, coordinating efforts between the protection and enforcement of technologies.

Michael’s practice also includes technical and design support, client counseling, intellectual property portfolio management, preparation of legal opinions, patent reexaminations, patent litigation, trade secrets, developing strategies for economically achieving the international protection, and other intellectual property related services.  Michael has also argued before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. 

Michael also enjoys learning technologies from his clients and he has experience in protecting various technologies including: automotive technologies (body, enclosures, interiors, lighting, manufacturing processes, powertrain, retractable tops, seating, suspensions and telematics); computer hardware; consumer products; heat exchangers; machining processes and tools; massagers; media storage hardware, systems and processes; mold manufacturing and processes; motorcycle powertrain and controls; personal care products; power tools; public audio and lighting; residential doors; spinal implants; and others.

Michael is very active in the Brooks Kushman mentor program.  He typically mentors the development of new hires, including lawyers, agents, and clerks.  Michael feels this experience helps build the firm, helps build strong teams for clients, and also helps him explain complex matters to clients, patent examiners, and others.
